At the same time, he was concealing a secret that would have a profound impact on his work—his affair with the young Marie-Thérèse Walter. She became the subject of some of the most sensual paintings in the history of art: Nude, Green Leaves and Bust.

Picasso was 50 years old when he painted the portrait of his lover. Their relationship remained a secret for a long time, as the artist was still married to Olga Khokhlova. The work was executed in oil on canvas and measures an impressive 162 by 130 centimetres. Today, it belongs to a private collection and is on long-term loan to Tate Modern.

The painting depicts a nude Marie-Thérèse reclining in a relaxed pose. Her body is rendered with soft, flowing lines and intense colors—violets, blues, greens, and pinks. In 2010, Nude, Green Leaves and Bust was sold at Christie’s auction house for 106,500,000 dollars. At the time, it was the highest price ever paid for a work of art at auction and further confirmed Picasso’s extraordinary position in the art market. The painting reveals a lesser-known side of Picasso.
